Thanks to the increased attention brought by the media, the subject of hypnosis is hardly a strange one. The notion of hypnosis is a common one. Hypnosis is the altered state of consciousness and an increased response to suggestions that has been induced in a person. Arriving at this state can be achieved in a number of ways. In some instances a hypnotist is required for a successful hypnotism. In other instances hypnosis can be self induced through the control of key areas like one’s own breathing.
Hypnosis is commonly used in medical circles. It is used in treating individuals with behavioral and psychological ailments. Some example of these include the treatment of pain for individuals who are suffering from body pain i.e back pain. Occasionally, the pain of pregnant women has been relieved through its use . However the bulk of the use of hypnosis is aimed at the treatment of psychological/ behavioral diseases. Example of such conditions includes overeating, smoking, and insomnia. Hypnosis can also be used for the treatment of individuals who are suffering from psychological ailments such as Raynaud’s Syndrome.
A loss of contact with the proximate surrounding is one of the effects found with people that are under hypnosis. The loss in sensory of physical experiences is replaced by an emphasis on mental and psychological sensation. The hypnotist is considered to be the handler during such hypnosis sessions. The level of the trance experienced by people vary from person to person. In an intense trance, individuals are able to respond to posthypnotic suggestions which they forget once the session has been completed. It is estimated that roughly 20 percent of subjects are able to attain this level of hypnosis.
Whilst the results of hypnotized sessions are permitted in some courts by way of introduction, its use as a form of evidence is mostly not allowed. The stated ability of a patient who has been hypnotized to inaccurately merge actual recounts with generated images fueled by his fantasies is one of the reasons . Depression and emotional fears are also known to sometimes taint the credibility behind the recount of an hypnotic session. Owing to all these, the results of a hypnotized session are merely considered in light of the individual’s emotion and not a testament of actual truth.
